Meet Susan McCullen
Songwriting was a surprise to me. I started
hearing tunes and words in my head in the early '80's. I was going
through some powerful inner work. I didn't believe the songs I heard
within were worthwhile, but when a melody or phrase wouldn't go
away, I paid attention. I was already covering other people's songs,
so I threw in a few of my own. They put me and other people in a
wonderful space.
Performing was something I knew I had
to do. I shook like a leaf when I sat down after singing, but it
got easier as time went on. I began to feel like moving my hands
and body while I sang. I felt foolish. I had very little dance/movement
training, but this was clearly part of my expression. What saved
me throughout all of this was people's response to my performance.
I got so much feedback about the energy experienced at one of my
concerts. I just had to let it happen. Now it's one of the most
joyful things I do.
Recording is a lot of fun. The most important
thing in the studio is to relax and let it flow. Combine this with
pitch, timing, breath control, and passion- whew! The cool thing
about recording, is that once you're done, you're done. This music
is now free to go places I never will. A new recording is said to
be released- this is literally true.
